What are the Category B High Schools in Kumasi
Category B High Schools in Kumasi are the second batch of schools graded by the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) according to the nationwide grading criteria who are situated in the Kumasi metro area of the Ashanti Region.
It is believed that metrics such as academic performance over there years, infrastructural development, achievements, etc.. constitute the grading criteria. Most importantly is the yearly WASSCE results by these schools. If that is so, then why is a school like Tepa senior high not a category A school because they’ve been topping WASSCE rankings for some time now. Anyways!
Yes, there have been some gains and drops in the category of some schools over the years. Notable was the upgrade of Kumasi High School from a category B school to a category A school in 2017 while schools such as Anglican SHS, Tweneboah Kodua SHS, St. Monica’s SHS, Effiduase, Konongo Odumase saw a drop from category A to category B.
However, in the 2020 Ghana Education Service (GES) Register of Course for Public Senior High, Technical and Vocational Institutes updated list, all Technical/Vocational Institutions have been categorized into A, B and C, and added to SHS/ SHTS by the GES.
This explains why Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) has been added as a Category A school. Congratulation to KTI, they deserve it.
Category B schools are not by any stretch of the imagination small schools or minnows. No, that’s not the case.
The categorization or grading of second-cycle schools in Ghana came about as a result of the introduction of the National Curriculum and Assessment Framework (NCAF) which was introduced into our education system in 2002. The NCAF is an umbrella framework for all subjects taught at the senior high school level.
It has been designed to ensure that students have access to quality learning experiences across the curriculum.
In order to achieve this goal, it divides each subject area into three categories: A1, A2 and C. These are further divided into subcategories. For example, Mathematics can be subdivided into Algebra I, II & III; Geometry; Trigonometry; Precalculus; Calculus, etc.
The grading of schools by the CSSPS is based on these categories. Schools with a grade above 90% will receive a “Grade 1” while those below 70% will receive a “Grade 2”. Those between 70-90% will receive a “Grade 3”, whilst anything less than 70% receives a “Grade 4”.
