UEW Kumasi Campus: University of Education Winneba (AAMUSTED)

Aren’t university colleges and sub-university campuses boring? Most people feel that they’re just ‘tertiary high schools’ in disguise. You must be a full university or nothing. And that is what the UEW Kumasi Campus has turned into.

The new university in town: the UEW Kumasi Campus is now Akenten Appiah-Menkah University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development – AAMUSTED for short.

Formerly known as the University of Education (UEW) Kumasi Campus, the institution is now autonomous. Meaning it is no longer a Kumasi branch of the main University of Education in Winneba. Hence, the new name AAMUSTED.

Let’s dive in and look at the various dynamics and changes.

The University of Education had 4 campuses:

  • University of Education, Winneba Campus (UEW)
  • University of Education, Kumasi Campus (COLTEK)
  • University of Education, Adjumako Campus (SOL)
  • University of Education, Mampong Campus. (CAGRIC)

Over the years, 3 campuses were carved out of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) which is the main campus. These campuses were situated in various parts of Ghana.

One in Kumasi – The College of Technology Education in Kumasi (COLTEK)

Another in Mampong – The College of Agriculture in Mampong – Ashanti (CAGRIC)

And the other in Adjumako – School of Ghana Languages (SOL)

Two of these campuses based in the Ashanti region, ie: the University of Education, Kumasi(Tanoso) and University of Education, Mampong(Ashanti) campuses have gained autonomy.

The new mandate for the university is providing higher education in technical and vocational training, technological and innovation as well as training and supplying the instructors with the necessary competence for teaching in those fields.

The university is also responsible for connecting the university with industry and other stakeholders to ensure the full training of teachers and students.

The government has plans to enhance university infrastructure and the quality of its staff as assistance for this undertaking. A number of lecturers have received scholarships to pursue ongoing studies abroad.

Nevertheless, the university is as great as other workshops and can boast of training facilities, laboratories for skills training and entrepreneurial development.

About UEW Kumasi Campus

The UEW Kumasi Campus, also known as COLTEK – The College of Technology Education in Kumasi has been around for some time.

First, it began as Kumasi Technical Training Center by Ghana’s Government with technical advice from the British Government in the 1950s. Construction works for a permanent site were kicked off In 1963 and completed in early 1966. Before that, it operated as a division of the Kumasi Polytechnic.

Around September 1966, most training guidance programmes were transferred from Kumasi Polytechnic to the present location. This expansion subsequently led to a range of other activities, including the name change to Technical Teachers College (TTC), and later transformed into Kumasi Advanced Technical Teachers College (KATTC).

Some of the College’s offerings were specialized areas in Commerce and Industrial Arts. They also started certificate courses in education studies over the years.

In response to the restructuring of Ghana Teacher Education programmes, the College (KATTC) in 1977, became one of the seven Diploma Awarding Colleges after its affiliation with the Institute of Education of the University of Cape Coast.

The PNDC Law 322, which instituted reforms within the educational system in Ghana in 1992, also elevated seven Diploma Awarding Institutions to constitute University College of Education, Winneba. (UCEW).

This move accelerated the confirmation of KATTC in 1992 as Kumasi Campus of UCEW.

An Act of Parliament, Act 672, granted autonomy status to University College of Education, Winneba (UCEW) in 2004 to become the University of Education, Winneba. This was after close to a decade under the University of Cape Coast’s tutelage and guidance.

By the same Act, the UEW Kumasi Campus also became known as the College of Technology Education, Kumasi. (COLTEK).

Kumasi Campus New Name (AAMUSTED): The Story behind the new University

Akenten Appiah-Menkah University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development – AAMUSTED for short is quite strange and fascinating at first sight but not farfetched.

AAMUSTED was created by Act 1026 (2019) which converted the College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK) and the College of Agriculture Education, Mampong (CAGRIC) campuses of the University of Education, Winneba into a fully-fledged and autonomous university.

Simply, University of Education, Kumasi Campus – The College of Technology Education in Kumasi (COLTEK) and the University of Education, Mampong Campus – The College of Agriculture in Mampong – Ashanti (CAGRIC) have gained independence. Hurray!

This means it will manage, control and govern itself free from any influence from the main campus in Winneba. These two new universities will have their own Governing Council and do things independently.

It’s all started with the president’s promise when he visited the school in 2019. In fact, it has always been the vision of the Asantehene to make COLTEK and CAGRIC autonomous. And the president who on seeking the mandate of the people had promised effective technical and vocational education training (TVET), was keen to make this a reality.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, therefore, signed the university’s bill into law on August 27, 2020.

The main objective of AAMUSTED is to spearhead the government’s vision to make entrepreneurship, job creation and industrialization a part of everyday life in Ghana.

How is that going to happen?

There should be robust technical and vocational education training (TVET) around the country which is effective and attractive to students.

A university Governing Council was sworn into office by the Minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh on Friday [November 27, 2020] in a brief ceremony in Kumasi.

The members of the Governing Council that were sworn into office are Mr. Paul Kwasi Agyeman (Government nominee), Dr. Joseph A. Apprey (Government nominee), Nana Bamfi-Adomako (Government nominee), Madam Nora Bannerman (Government nominee), Nana Ama A. Prempeh Gyesaw (Government nominee), Prof Mark Adom Asamoah (GTEC), Dr. Stephen Baffour Adjei (Convocation), Mr. Evans Douglas Salvo (APTVET), Dr. Fred Kyei Asamoah (Commission for TVET), Dr. Yaw Adu Gyamfi (AGI) and Prof. F. K. Sarfo as the acting Vice-Chancellor.

Prof. F. K. Sarfo, who was the Principal of COLTEK became the first Vice-Chancellor of AAMUSTED.

Mr. Paul Kwasi Agyeman became the first chairman of the University Governing Council.

Some wise words from the Minister of education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh. He said, “It is particularly important that you be guided at all times by the specific purpose for which this university is set up. In all your decisions and deliberations, you must not lose focus of this and be tempted to introduce programmes that are of no relevance to the core mandate of this university. I cannot stress this enough,”

The minister who inaugurated the governing council on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo charged the council to remain focused on its mandate and not to derail.

The acting Vice-Chancellor of AAMUSTED, Prof Frederick K. Sarfo, also in his welcome address thanked President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for giving the University autonomy and making do with his promise.
